A seminar on how local businesses can navigate government regulations attracted a capacity crowd of about 40 Ahwatukee Foothills business owners last Wednesday.
The "Business Toolbox" event featured commentary by Phoenix City Councilman Sal DiCiccio, whose district includes Ahwatukee Foothills, as well as some city staff.
"The purpose was to bring awareness to business services through the city of Phoenix," said Terri Kimble, president of the Ahwatukee Foothills Chamber of Commerce, which hosted the event at the Grace Inn.
The seminar is part of an ongoing series of chamber tutorials aimed at strengthening local businesses. Upcoming topics include such things as financing, how to do business with the government and get on public agencies' preferred vendors lists, Kimble said.
"If they're having issues with their business, there are resources that are in place to help strengthen them," she said.
DiCiccio spoke about how he believes city of Phoenix taxes and fees are stifling businesses, and how he'd like to reduce government's footprint.
The seminar attracted Ahwatukee Foothills residents Greg Pierzchalski and Dave Barnes, founders of No Slip Zone, a company that provides chemical treatments to give slippery floors some grip. Both men were laid off from their previous jobs in recent months. Pierzchalski was chief estimator for a windows manufacturer for 32 years, while Barnes was senior project manager for a medical imaging company for 25 years.
The pair decided to go into business together in August.
"We were both downsized, basically. This is a totally unrelated field, but something we did a lot of research on," Pierzchalski said. "Hopefully we'll get some contact with city officials to become an authorized vendor for the city."
Scott Hayden, owner of Ahwatukee-based Hayden Motorcoach, which provides bus tours of the southwest United States, said he's looking for "windows of opportunity."
"I'm just down here to see what's new," he said.
