The Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA hosted its third annual Spin-a-Thon Oct. 23 and raised more than $1,000 for local causes.

The local YMCA, 1030 E. Liberty Lane, opened its doors from 8 a.m. to noon to help raise money for Strong Kids Scholarships and Singleton Moms.

The Spin-A-Thon consisted of four different spinning classes at the YMCA led by instructors from the organization. Members of the community were welcomed to sign up for $10 per class and then find sponsorship. The YMCA had 11 riders who opted to ride for all four classes.

The first class kicked off the Spin-A-Thon with 29 riders (the maximum amount of bikes in the class) and there was an average of 20 riders in each following ride.

All together the YMCA raised $1,350.

The Strong Kids Program is run by the YMCA to raise money for YMCA scholarships. During tough economic times many families find themselves unable to afford classes that their kids wish to attend. The YMCA's mission statement is to never turn anyone away from its classes. The Strong Kids Program helps these families afford the classes they want to attend through donations. The program needs about $144,000 yearly to reach its goals, said Debbie Mitchell, healthy lifestyle administrator for the YMCA.

Though most of the money will go to the Strong Kids Program the YMCA will also be donating a portion of the proceeds to Singleton Moms in honor of Women's Wellness Week.

Singleton Moms offers help to single mothers with cancer by providing cleaning services, meals and some financial support during chemo treatments when these tasks may be impossible.

The YMCA plans to host a similar fundraiser again next year, but possibly changing the class to something of a different genre.
