More than 70 Phoenix police officers have retaken their oaths of office.

Thursday’s ceremony at City Hall was part of a new policy by Police Chief Daniel Garcia aimed at reminding officers of their responsibility to the community.

Members of the police department ranging from the police chief to rank-and-file officers have to take the oath every January.

When taking the oath, officers swear to support the laws and Constitution and defend against all enemies.

The Phoenix Law Enforcement Association represents more than 2,500 patrol officers. The association calls the oath unnecessary because officers don’t need to be reminded of their duty.

But Garcia says the pledge holds deep meaning because it’s a connection to the community.
