A Tempe police officer died in a car crash Thursday when a driver failed to yield to his oncoming motorcycle.

Phoenix police responded to a serious injury collision just after 5 p.m. at 48th and Western streets, just north of Elliot Road, according to Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos.

When officers arrived they found the victim, 40-year-old Scott J. Saffell, who had been riding a motorcycle southbound on 48th Street. A 24-year-old woman driving a Chrysler sedan was facing north in the left-turn lane and failed to yield to the motorcyclist as she made her left turn, colliding with Saffell, Martos said.

Saffell was not speeding and was wearing his helmet, but was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The female driver was not injured, Martos said.
