Playing her part in National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Ahwatukee Foothills studio salon owner April Harper is donating 10 percent of her revenue to a fundraiser benefitting Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Through the Passionately Pink fundraiser, Harper is aiming to raise $500 this month to help women receive free or low-cost breast screenings.

“It’s important, so many women are being diagnosed at a younger age,” said Harper, 34, inspired by one of her clients who is a survivor.

“What really brought that close to home is that she’s my age,” Harper said. “She was really an inspiration.”

Harper’s studio salon, Parlour Hair Design, opened as a small, studio salon within Ahwatukee Signature Salon Studios in late July. As the shop owner, and only employee, Harper said she is able to get involved with numerous organizations and causes, which she couldn’t do working for a bigger salon.

“It was part of my reasoning for doing it,” she said.

Harper said she would like to help other organizations along with Susan G. Komen for the Cure, ultimately getting involved with the surrounding community. Though she lives in Gilbert, the majority of her clientele are in Ahwatukee.

“It’s one of the charitable organizations that I’m going to commit to and it’s the first,” said Harper, of Susan. G. Komen for the Cure.

Harper is also accepting independent donations for the Passionately Pink fundraiser, along with the 10 percent from haircuts and color services.

“Hair stylists tend to be boxed in... but I want to do something different,” she added.

Parlour Hair Design, 3936 E. Chandler Blvd., takes in clients by appointment only.
