Valley Dogs Rescue will host their third annual Fore the Dogs Golf Tournament Saturday, May 3 at Foothills Golf Club.

Last year the tournament raised $11,000 for the non-profit and this year they’ve set a goal of $13,000. The event is the largest fundraiser of the year for the charity which spends nearly $75,000 each year on medical bills for the dogs they rescue.

Valley Dogs Rescue has no facility but saves dogs from euthanasia by placing them in foster homes until adopted. The organization has no paid volunteers so all money donated goes directly to vet bills. Michael West, president of Valley Dogs Rescue, estimates they spend an average of $325 per dog but they do not turn dogs away for medical reasons.

The group also works with Vets and their Pets, which helps veterans with temporary care for their pets.

“We’re helping veterans, street strays and animals abandoned and otherwise neglected,” West said. “We assist the Humane Society, Maricopa County Animal Control and others. We’re helping drive the euthanasia rate down through our efforts. Especially with medical care, we take on cases that other organizations just can’t.”

The Fore the Dogs Charity Golf Tournament, sponsored by Ahwatukee Skin and Laser, will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 3. Harley Davidson of Chandler has donated a Harley for the hole-in-one challenge.

An after party will begin at 4:30 p.m. with a barbecue dinner, raffle and silent and live auction.

The tournament is organized each year by Ahwatukee Foothills residents Marci and Josh Miller.

“What my husband and I enjoy the most is it’s not just a fundraiser where you go and spend money,” Marci said. “Everybody really has a fun time doing it. It’s a really enjoyable event. That’s important for us, to not only raise money but to have people want to come out and participate because it’s so fun.”

Marci said last year they had just under 100 golfers sign up. This year within a few weeks of opening registration they already had more than 70 golfers. They’re hoping to max out at 122 golfers.

The cost is $80 per person or $320 per a team of four. For more information or to register visit
