Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz) and a raft of other Republican candidates swept into Ahwatukee Foothills Friday afternoon as part of a last-minute state tour to rally supporters.

More than 100 people, many wearing t-shirts of the candidates they came to support - with a few "Fire Pelosi" shirts thrown in - crowded into a ballroom at the Grace Inn, southwest of Interstate 10 and Elliot Road.

McCain said that Ahwatukee Foothills often is a bellwhether for the Legislative and Congressional districts in which it resides.

"Ahwatukee is a swing area for this district," McCain said. "Ahwatukee has generally gone to the person who won his or her race."

Brewer said local support has been high.

"Ahwatukee is a very important high turnout voting area," she said. "The encouragement and support has been terrific out of this district."

David Schweikert, who is running against incumbent Democrat Harry Mitchell for the U.S. House of Representatives, and Tom Horne, who is running against Democrat Felecia Rotellini for Arizona Attorney General, also appeared at the event, along with several other candidates for various offices.
