Ahwatukee Foothills residents John King and Moses Sanchez were recently sworn in as board members for the Kyrene and Tempe Union school districts as the first governing board meetings of the year got under way this week.

King, joined by re-elected members Michelle Hirsch and Ross Robb, was sworn in as a new member of the Kyrene School District Governing Board with a small, district ceremony on Dec. 21.

The former college professor, who is serving on a school board for the first time, said he is eager to get started on the district’s budget.

“The budget is really pressing right now,” King said before his first board meeting. “I’d like to avoid cutting more classrooms and looking at how we operate as a business.”

In November, Kyrene projected a near $8.9 million budget deficit for the upcoming fiscal year beginning July 1.

“Our budgeting process is peculiar to me, so I’d like to wrap my arms around that better,” King added.

At Tempe Union, Sanchez was joined by fellow newcomer Sandy Lowe and re-elected member Michelle Helm for a swearing-in ceremony before the district’s governing board meeting on Wednesday.

“I’m excited, it’s starting to sink in,” Sanchez said.

Security procedures, bullying, and funding for the next year are among the most important topics to discuss, according to Sanchez.

With a number of parents and residents already expressing concerns for security measures and bullying, Sanchez added that they too have come to the forefront of issues to tackle.

“I’m eager to jump into that, and we want to make sure the public knows we’re addressing them,” he said.

New and re-elected school board members were officially sworn in last month by the Maricopa Country Superintendent in downtown Phoenix.
