Ahwatukee Foothills resident Jessamine Duclos was looking for a good way to spend his day off from work. He found an outlet through Phoenix Children’s Hospital and for the past few months has been giving up his free time every Friday to volunteer.

An employee of the Department of Homeland Security, Duclos spends about four hours every Friday behind the hospital’s coffee cart. He hits each level of Phoenix Children’s Hospital, handing out coffee, tea, and snacks for free to patients and their families.

“It’s a chance for me to spread cheer and just bring out my positive energy to whatever family members of patients are there,” he said. “It helps, not in a big way, but a tiny way.”

Duclos started training as a volunteer in January and has recently committed himself to fundraising for the hospital. This will be the ninth year of the Miracles in Motion program, set up to raise money for Phoenix Children’s Hospital, and Duclos will be participating for what he says is the first year of many to come.

“I’m in it for life now,” he said. “I love it.”

Last year, 95 runners participated in the program and raised $140,000 for the hospital, which takes the nine-year total to more than $700,000. It culminates in the P.F. Chang’s half-marathon and full-marathon in January.

The runners start fundraising and training for the marathons on Aug. 18. Each person is asked to raise at least $1,500 and Duclos said he has set his sights on $3,000. The money is used by Phoenix Children’s Hospital to grow the facility and fund critical programs, technology, and research.

“It’s not like a hospital at all,” Duclos said. “Everything is world class at this place. And they told us that is the reputation Phoenix Children’s has and we have to live up to that.”
