The 90-day comment period on the Draft Environmental Impact Study (DEIS) for the proposed South Mountain Loop 202 Freeway ends this week on July 24.

All comments must be received by Wednesday to be considered in the Arizona Department of Transportation’s (ADOT) final DEIS.

As of July 12, ADOT had received 1,291 unique visitors to the online public forum and 5,854 total email, hotline and mailed comments. In addition, 720 guests signed in at the community forums and public hearings hosted by ADOT.

The community forum in Ahwatukee Foothills had the greatest attendance with 207 people signed in. The forum at Sunridge Elementary in Phoenix had 12 attendees, the Gila River Indian Community forum had 65 attendees, Chandler had 24, Laveen had 32, and Avondale had 20.

ADOT and the Federal Highway Administration provided the public with 90 days to review and comment on the DEIS, double the length required by federal law.

All comments will be addressed in the Final Environmental Impact Study (FEIS), which is expected to be released in 2014. Once the FEIS is released the community will have 60 days to comment on it. At the conclusion of the comment period the Federal Highway Administration will give its record of decision.

ADOT believes the record of decision may come as early as 2014, and construction could begin in 2015. Funding for the project has already been approved in the Maricopa Association of Government’s Regional Transportation Plan. The 22-mile-long project is expected to cost $1.9 billion.
