Phoenix City Council members voted Tuesday to move forward with the staff-recommended redistricting plan.

Councilman Sal DiCiccio, who fought against the early plans to split Ahwatukee Foothills into two districts, also asked for reconsideration of the plan to work on northern areas of District 6.

In the first round of redistricting meetings held in February and March, consultants had recommended that new district lines split Ahwatukee, leaving one portion of the area to be grouped with Laveen. That plan was struck down by the second round of meetings.

“It would have literally broke apart our fabric of being able to get anything done,” DiCiccio said of the original plans to split Ahwatukee.

The final plan needs to be sent to the Department of Justice for review by July, as the City Council is required to adjust district lines every 10 years.

While DiCiccio approves of the final redistricting plan, saying the map “as a whole is a lot better than what it could have been,” he is now focused on adjusting small areas of his northern part of the district for review July 3.

“You have to move forward with something,” DiCiccio said during the council meeting.
