While most teenagers are concerned about where they will spend their summer vacation away from school and responsibility, one Ahwatukee teen is taking a different route.

That route is trying his hand at being a small-business owner.

Bailey Flansburg, 15, is in the early stages of getting his business, Rain Dial Repair by Bails, off the ground.

Flansburg fixes residential irrigation controllers in Ahwatukee, most of which are rain dials. He learned the trade from his dad, Rob, who works in commercial landscaping.

Once he gets a call about a malfunctioning rain dial, Flansburg said he could ride his bike out to the home, diagnose it for free, and if needed, take the controller home for repair.

With the Valley’s extreme heat, irrigation systems breaking down are common, making it a perfect summer business. That is, if you know how to fix them.

Initially starting as a summer project to help his dad with repairs, it turned into a summer business venture that Flansburg said, “beats working at the movie theaters.”

The soon-to-be sophomore at Valley Christian High School plans to advertise more when business increases.

“I think it’s great, it’s a way to expose him to entrepreneurship,” Rob said.

Plus with school being a top priority, Rob added, this business is a good way for Flansburg to make money and not take hours away from studying.

Though Flansburg agreed his business is a good and relatively easy way to start working, he has future plans of going to a Bible college in San Diego and eventually becoming a pilot.

Flansburg said he never thought he’d be a business owner at 15, and the reality of all has yet to hit him.

“I’m excited about it,” said Flansburg, “It’ll be a good thing for me to do for the summer.”

To those who may be skeptical about Flansburg’s qualifications for repairs, he said simply, “it runs in the blood, my dad does this for a living and I learn fast.”
