Several Valley agencies and municipalities will receive funding through two Federal Transit Administration grant programs, Job Access Reverse Commute and New Freedom, created to expand transportation services for persons with disabilities or low-income individuals. The regional panel conducting the selection process recommended awarding approximately $3.2 million in funds to support projects of transit agencies and nonprofit organizations.

The Job Access Reverse Commute (JARC) program assists in developing or expanding transportation services that connect welfare recipients and other low-income persons to jobs and other employment-related services. The New Freedom grant program supports new public transportation services and public transportation alternatives beyond those required by the American Disabilities Act (ADA).

Eligible applicants include private nonprofit organizations, state or local governmental authorities and operators of public transportation services including private operators. The awarded program funding is for fiscal year 2012-13. The Federal Transit Administration is expected to award the funds by mid-2013.
