A man is in critical condition after an apparent head-on collision on 48th Street near Elliot Road this morning in Ahwatukee.

Both directions of 48th Street are shut down between Elliot and Guadalupe roads as Phoenix police continue to investigate the accident, which occurred sometime around 8 a.m.

Police believe a Honda Accord was traveling northbound on 48th Street when it crossed the center line and collided head-on with a Dodge pickup truck, Sgt. Trent Crump of the Phoenix Police Department said.

The truck rolled onto its side but the driver was able to crawl out of the vehicle shortly after the crash, Crump said. The driver of the Honda was transported to an area hospital in critical condition.

"It would probably take a miracle for him to survive this collision," Crump said. "They were working on him as they left this location. It took somewhere between 30 and 45 minutes to get him out of the vehicle this morning because of the damage. It is extremely serious."

Police are still waiting on word from the hospital on the man's condition, but they have brought out a vehicular crimes unit and a fatality team to help investigate the scene. That investigation is expected to last between two and four hours, and 48th Street will be closed in both directions during that time.

Crump said there is no evidence of alcohol being a factor. Police believe the driver of the Honda, who was the sole occupant in the vehicle, was headed to work at the time of the accident. The driver's identity has not been released at this time.

Some witnesses did remain at the scene to provide information to police officers.
