A fire destroyed a home near the 10400 block of South 44th Place in Ahwatukee Foothills Friday afternoon.

The residents of the home were home at the time, said Capt. Larry Nunez of the Phoenix Fire Department. A man living in the home noticed flames coming from the back of their home and alerted his parents. Everyone was able to get out safely.

“A man attempted to get a garden hose on the back, but obviously with a fire this big it was unsuccessful,” Nunez said. “The young man as smart enough to get everyone out and tell his dad to leave it alone and get away.”

The family was displaced. There was a crisis response team on hand Friday afternoon to make sure the family had a place to stay for the night. The fire destroyed the attic and portions of the kitchen and living room. Fire crews from Guadalupe and Phoenix were forced to break a hole in the roof to help reach the flames.

The fire started in the back of the home and spread quickly through the attic. It’s unknown what caused the fire. Crews have been called to investigate the cause, Nunez said.
