On Sept. 11, long rows of American flags - 3,000 of them, one for each person who lost his or her life in the terrorist attacks on that day in 2001 - will grace Tempe Beach Park in what organizers are calling a "Healing Field."

This is the seventh year the 8-foot-tall flags have been erected in the park, at the northwest corner of Mill Avenue and Rio Salado Parkway, on the south side of Tempe Town Lake.

Ahwatukee Foothills resident Mark Poisson, who is serving as chairman of this year's event, said organizers expect 5,000 to 10,000 people throughout the weekend.

"Possibly a little more because ASU has a home game Saturday night," Poisson said.

The field, entrance to which is free and accessible to the public, will be open between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. each day from Sept. 10 to 12.

On Sept. 11, the event will open with a ceremony at 5:40 a.m. There will be a candlelight vigil at 7 p.m. The event is being hosted by the Valley of the Sun Exchange Club Foundation and the city of Tempe.

Also on Sept. 11, the Chandler Symphony Orchestra will be holding a free Patriots Celebration Concert in commemoration of the date, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Chandler Center for the Arts, 250 N. Arizona Ave.

To volunteer with the Healing Field, call (602) 402-7928.
