Gas prices have risen more than 50 cents in the past month, but AAA of Arizona says the state is still paying less for gas than the rest of the nation.

The national average increased 15 cents over the past week to $3.78 per gallon. In Phoenix prices rose 13.5 cents to $3.625 per gallon. Still, that price is up 52 cents from last month and Ahwatukee Foothills drivers say they’ve been noticing.

Randy Taylor, an Ahwatukee Foothills resident, said he’s paying $10 more per fill up than he was just a few short weeks ago.

“It’s got me thinking maybe I need to not go so many places or combine the trips,” he said. “It’s definitely got me thinking about it.”

Tashmin Sadia, who lives in Chandler but works in Ahwatukee, said driving less during the week isn’t really an option but that the increase in prices has her thinking twice before going out on the weekends.

“If anything, maybe on the weekends if we need to go out we try to reduce taking one car with one person,” she said. “We’re trying to carpool a little more whenever necessary. The concept of carpooling wasn’t really imperative in the past. Now it has taken a front seat.”

AAA said despite the sharp increase, there are only seven states in the U.S. with lower fuel prices than Arizona but the price is unseasonably high.
