Congressional candidate Andrei Cherny was endorsed by former President Bill Clinton and former Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon last week, nearly a month away from primary elections.

Clinton released a statement last week about his support for Cherny, mentioning their work together in the White House.

Clinton also supports the candidate for having the “right values, the right ideas, and the ability to get things done.”

“In Congress, Andrei will work to improve the quality of our public schools, create good new jobs, and defend Social Security and Medicare,” Clinton said in a statement.

Cherny, former Democratic Party chairman and Clinton’s former White House aide, said he was “very honored” after hearing news of the endorsement.

“Certainly he is the most respected Democrat in America,” said Cherny, who mentioned that Clinton doesn’t usually make endorsements in the Democratic primary.

“It shows who the best choice is for the middle class,” Cherny added.

Gordon, whose eight-year mayorship ended in 2011, said Cherny’s “record of accomplishments demonstrates his ability to bring real change to Washington.”

“The status quo is unacceptable and Andrei’s experience in the Clinton White House working to create economic growth is exactly what our state and country needs,” said Gordon in a statement.

Gordon joins other local endorsers of Cherny including former Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard, former Arizona Democratic Party chairman Jim Pederson, State Rep. Ruben Gallego, Phoenix Councilman Michael Nowakowski, former State Rep. Rae Waters, and Mesa Councilman Dennis Kavanaugh, according to Cherny’s website.

The state’s recently formed Congressional District 9 covers Ahwatukee Foothills, Tempe, west Chandler and west Mesa, part of Paradise Valley, south Scottsdale and north-central Phoenix.

The Arizona primary election is set for Aug. 28.
