Ahwatukee resident Michele O’Leary wasn’t planning on potentially saving a person’s life from a car crash on Monday afternoon.

At 12:30 p.m. O’Leary was in the used book section at Ahwatukee’s Ironwood Library, 4333 E. Chandler Blvd., when she overheard honking from outside.

She went outside and noticed a car was driving on the wrong side of the road, heading into the direction of oncoming traffic.

O’Leary took matters into her own hands and decided to be a Good Samaritan and guide the vehicle into the library’s parking lot.

O’Leary said the driver wasn’t responsive when she was trying to get the car clear from danger.

However, when she spoke about the driver’s dog, which was on the driver’s lap the driver become more coherent.

O’Leary was under the assumption the driver may have been intoxicated due to her unresponsive state.

“Her eyes were open and she kept looking at me, but she couldn’t respond. It was pretty scary with all the cars coming and I couldn’t get her out of the car,” O’Leary said. “The paramedics came to test her and I couldn’t believe that her blood sugar was at 23.”

Luckily, no one was hurt during the incident.

O’Leary said she was so glad she was there to help with the situation.

“I came home all shaking, but at the time I wasn’t thinking anything. You just know what you have to do,” O’Leary said.
