It seems only appropriate that a memorial run for Pat Quinn take place where he would run nearly every day before school, and the place where he passed away on May 23.

The inaugural Pat Quinn Community 5K will take place on Saturday, and it’s open to the public. It is free to participate but donations can be made to Desert Vista Cross Country, which will then be given to Quinn’s two favorite charities.

Quinn passed away in the early hours on May 23, the result of an apparent heart attack. He was a security guard at Desert Vista from 2002-2004 and then again from 2006-2012.

Sign ups begin at 5:45 a.m. on Saturday, with the 5K beginning at 7 a.m., following a special presentation dedicated to Quinn’s life.

“He loved running and all of us who loved him want this to be a wonderful and successful tribute to the man he was and to his legacy,” said Maryanne Henderson, a friend and member of his running group, in an email. “Pat really did touch so many lives in Ahwatukee and beyond.”

Among the runners on Aug. 25 will be Desert Vista principal Dr. Anna Battle.
