Trader Joe's grocery chain announced this week that it would donate 6,000 roasted half-turkeys to St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance in Phoenix to help the needy on Thanksgiving.

The turkeys could feed up to 20,000 people, according to a statement from St. Mary's.

"We have seen unprecedented demand in the past week which has exceeded even the generous donations of the public," said Terry Shannon, St. Mary's president and CEO. "Thanks to this delivery of 6,000 turkeys, we will be able to serve the record numbers we are seeing."
