The Valley’s recent surge of warm weather is bringing people outdoors more and the city of Phoenix parks and recreation department is looking to capitalize.

The department will hold its Spring into Nature event Sunday at South Mountain Park, a free clinic on just about everything the park offers this time of year.

“It’s a really good way to get your head set for the upcoming warmer months,” Park Ranger Liz Smith said. “And it’s all geared toward fun.”

The event will run from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the park’s activity complex, 10919 S. Central Ave.

The event will feature an introduction to archery class, a climbing wall, 30-minute guided hikes and a Ranger table.

The Arizona Herpetological Society and Arizona Game and Fish will be on site with reptiles and other wildlife you might come across on a hike through South Mountain Park. Likewise, Liberty Wildlife will feature multiple birds of prey hikes might see.

Outdoor outfitter REI will have a booth set up, as will the Leave No Trace travelling group, sharing its seven principles.

“It really is for everyone,” Smith said. “There isn’t one thing that’s for older people, one for younger and something for people in between. It really is for all ages.”

Additionally, tandem bikes, hand cycles and bikes for those with limited mobility will be available to test out on one of the mountain paths.

Visitors are encouraged to bring their own bikes, as it will be the monthly Silent Sunday when motorized vehicles are prohibited from the park’s paths.
