Ahwatukee residents have a dozen candidates to choose from for representation in Congress, the State Senate and State House of Representatives.

Congressional District 9 is currently being represented by Democrat Kyrsten Sinema, who won the highly competitive seat in 2012. This year she is being challenged by Retired Lt. Col. Wendy Rogers, a former officer in the Air Force, and Andrew Walter, a former professional football player.

Sinema went to Congress after serving six years in the Arizona House of Representatives and one year in the State Senate. She’s a former social worker with a master’s degree in social work and a law degree and Ph. D. from Arizona State University where she still teaches graduate level courses. Rogers is a fifth generation military officer and a small business owner. With her husband of 35 years she runs a property inspection company. Walter is an Arizona native and former quarterback at Arizona State University. He went on to play in the NFL and later returned to ASU to earn his Master of Business Administration. The State Senate race in District 18 includes one Democratic candidate and two Republicans.

Dr. Janie Hydrick ran for the seat in the 2012 election and lost to incumbent John McComish. She spent her entire professional career as an educator in public and private schools and through all levels of education. She holds multiple degrees including a doctorate from the University of Arizona, Arizona State University and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Jeff Dial has served in the Arizona House of Representatives since 2011. He is a Realtor with Century 21 Arizona Foothills and veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve. He currently serves as the vice chairman of the Banking and Insurance Committee and is on the Military Affairs and Public Safety Committee and the Technology and Infrastructure Committee. Tom Morrissey is the owner and operator of two small businesses and a retired Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal. He is the former chair of the Arizona Republican Party. There are six candidates for the State House of Representatives.

Scott Ryan is running as an Independent. He leads a technology consulting practice for the Signature Technology Group that delivers technology solutions to Fortune 500 companies and small businesses. Ryan has also been a small business owner, entrepreneur, and has worked with Intel, Microsoft, Insight, American Express, and Wells Fargo throughout his career. John King is the owner and operator of Majestic Beverages and a former adjunct professor at University of Phoenix. He specializes in providing technology-based solutions for organizations. Jill Norgaard is a small business owner and former vice president of a major aerospace/defense manufacturing company. David Pheanis is a professor emeritus of computer science and engineering at ASU, where he taught computer engineering for 30 years. He is also a retired U.S. Air Force officer and founder of Western Microsystems. He has a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering, a MS in electrical engineering, and a BS with honors in math. Bob Robson has served in the House of Representatives since 2001. He took two years off due to term limits. He is a former Chandler City Councilman and small business owner. He has a Master of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice.
