A man was found dead on the Pima Canyon Trail of South Mountain near Ahwatukee Foothills early Sunday morning, Phoenix Fire Department officials said.

The Phoenix Fire Department received a call of a man collapsed on the Pima Canyon Trail at around 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 18. Hikers who came across the man attempted CPR until fire crews arrived, said Jonathan Jacobs, spokesman for the Phoenix Fire Department.

Crews were able to reach the man in minutes, but he was dead when they arrived. They attempted life-saving measures for about a half hour but were unable to revive him, Jacobs said. The man was not transported to any hospital.

The death appears to be from natural causes, said Sgt. Trent Crump of the Phoenix Police Department. Jacobs said it appears he suffered some sort of cardiac arrest. His body was sent to the coroner’s office.

The man’s identity has not been released. He is estimated to be in his 50s, but Jacobs said he was not carrying any identification.
