If the students at Kyrene de la Estrella Elementary School weren't excited about this year's Read-a-thon, the school assembly on Monday, Feb. 7, helped them get there.
Students were greeted by Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Barry Enright, who played a game from the TV show Minute to Win It with two teachers. The Phoenix Suns Gorilla also showed up for the assembly and passed out prizes to students for answering Suns trivia questions.
Both special guests made it clear they were there to encourage the students to continue to read.
"Reading is important for whatever you want to do in the future," Enright said.
Last year, the inaugural Read-a-thon event raised about $3,000. Students secure friends and family members who sponsor them for 50 cents for every 15 pages they read.
