Two Ahwatukee Foothills Kyrene School District employees were honored at an awards ceremony Wednesday as being the best in their field.

Kyrene del Milenio Elementary School Principal Jim Verrill was named Administrator of the Year at the award ceremony, which was sponsored by the Kyrene Foundation and Tempe School Credit Union.

"Jim Verrill is an exceptional leader who is well-deserving of this honor," Kyrene Superintendent David Schauer said in an email. "It has been my pleasure to watch Jim thrive as a school principal over the years, first at Sierra Elementary and now at Milenio Elementary School. Jim's contribution to the Kyrene District as a whole is invaluable and I look forward to his continued success."

Jacque Moorefield, the librarian at Kyrene Centennial Middle School, was awarded Teacher of the Year. She has been at Centennial since 2008 and before that worked at Akimel A-al Middle School.

"The first thing I could say about Jacque is she has such a love for books and she goes way above than I have ever seen so kids can check out the books they want," Centennial Principal Ev Michell said. "She's just there for kids. She's in the library in the morning before school, and after school she is there to help them with homework."

The award winners were nominated by their peers. In their fifth year of sponsoring the event, members of the Kyrene Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the needs of the district, and Tempe Schools Credit Union, picked the winners. The ceremony took place at the Kyrene District office, 8700 S. Kyrene Road.
