The Inagural Mayor’s International Gala coming up on Thursday promises to be a night full of culture and diversity.

The event, in cooperation with Phoenix Sister Cities, will feature entertainment from many different cultures including hoop dancing, a Chinese lion, drummers, Mexican dancers, Greek dancers, Polynesian dancers, and more. There will be food from several different countries and cultures.

The event will take place on April 3 at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel, 340 N. Third St. The reception will be from 6 to 7 p.m. and the dinner will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tickets cost $100. All proceeds will benefit Phoenix Sister Cities.

“Phoenix Sister Cities is a powerful global network for our city,” said Mayor Greg Stanton. “It opens the doors for international access, opportunities, and resources for both local businesses and our residents. This event celebrates our diversity and helps ensure that Phoenix Sister Cities can continue to bring our city a rich variety of cultural, economic and educational programs in the future.”

Phoenix Sister Cities hosts a youth exchange program and also organizes business delegations with other countries. The group is also responsible for hosting delegations from other countries that visit Phoenix. The nonprofit was looking to create a signature event, said co-chair for the event Sue Lindmeier. When they were approached by Stanton looking to celebrate culture in the city, the event seemed like a perfect fit.

“It’s a tremendous international event,” Lindmeier said. “If you want to learn about different cultures and meet people from different cultures, this is the event.”

More than 20 different countries will be represented at the event.

During the evening Mayor Stanton will present the first city of Phoenix Global Citizens Award to a resident for his or her outstanding contributions to international relations.

Tickets are available via the Phoenix Sister Cities, Inc. website, phoenixsistercities.org, or by calling (602) 534-3751.
