A 16-year-old student who was recently suspended from Mountain Pointe High School in Ahwatukee was arrested and detained by police Wednesday after a Facebook post that threatened to place explosives at the school.

Sgt. Tommy Thompson, a Phoenix Police Department spokesman, said the student posted on the social networking site Tuesday about the explosives and was later reported to administration.

The school was searched Wednesday where no explosives were found. Thompson said the student was detained at the Maricopa County Juvenile Court Center where he was charged with making threats.

“It did not appear that he had any explosives or the ability to create them,” Thompson added.

Phoenix police could not confirm Friday if the student was released.

Though school resumed as normal on Thursday, Principal Bruce Kipper released a letter to parents assuring that safety and school security remains a top priority.

“There will be extra security on and around campus, as well as extra police presence,” he said in the letter.

Kipper added that he wanted parents to be aware of the situation, and explain the severity of the threat to students and children.

Thompson added that these kinds of threats aren’t common, but that Phoenix police are diligent to investigate.

“I don’t think they are that common,” said Thompson. “But in light of the events over the last several years, we take them very serious.”
