It’s time to let the dogs out this weekend for the Seventh Annual Ahwatukee Dog Show at Ahwatukee Park, 4700 E. Warner Road.

Dogs from across the Valley will come together on Saturday, March 23 to compete for prizes in nine categories. This year the categories are best dressed, best kisser, best tail wag, cutest dog, cutest rescue dog, cutest senior, most unusual, best high five and most talkative.

While the dogs compete for ribbons and prizes, guests and spectators are welcome to enjoy booths from rescue groups, breed clubs and vendors. There will be doggie first aid demonstrations from Ahwatukee Commons Vet Hospital and flyball demonstrations from Desert Dog Obedience. There will also be search and rescue demonstrations.

Ralph’s food truck will be selling breakfast and lunch items while Bernese Mountain Dogs will be selling bottled water.

Breed clubs like the Bernese Mountain Dogs, Sporting Dogs Association, English Setter Club, Golden Retriever Club and Beagle Club will be present with information about their club and breeds. Rescue organizations like Empty Bowl Pet Pantry, Valley Dog Rescue and Happy Tails Service Dogs will also have booths with information.

Plenty of water and shade for the dogs will be available.

There will be a raffle during the event. Proceeds will benefit Valley Dog Rescue, a local rescue group with no facility. They rely strictly on foster homes and volunteers to take in stray dogs and rehabilitate them to prepare them for adoption. Most of the cost the group incurs is for vet bills.

The event is co-sponsored by Desert Dog Obedience, Petco and the Ahwatukee Swim and Tennis Center.

Pre-registration for the event has begun. The cost to enter a dog into one category is $7, with each additional event costing $3. The day of registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and prices will go up $1.

Dogs may enter the competition up until the category is called for judging. There will be a separate competition ring for kids under 12 and adults. Proceeds from the competition benefit the Ahwatukee Swim and Tennis Center.

Guests do not have to have a dog entered into the competition to come and enjoy the day.

All dogs must be at least 4 months old and have current shots to compete. Dogs at the event must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet.
