Every candidate for Phoenix City Council responding to a survey by Arizona Citizens for the Arts expressed support for increasing the city arts grants budget to $1 per capita.

Based on the current population of Phoenix, that would provide $1.4 million for local, public arts grant funding.

Thirteen of 16 candidates vying for council seats in Districts 2, 4, 6 and 8 responded to the five-question survey designed to gauge support for arts and culture in Phoenix. Complete survey responses can be found online at www.azcitizensforthearts.org. Both candidates for District 6 did respond.

All candidates responding said they would support a long-term goal of achieving a goal of $1 per capita funding for the grants program managed by the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture.

Candidates also were asked how else they would support arts and culture programs in the city, and specifically in their home council districts.

The Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture grants program experienced significant cuts during the recession, but has received increases in the last two years to its present level of $430,000.

Should the city move to the $1 per capita increase from its current level of $.30, it would represent another major benefit for arts and culture following the recent approval of the Arizona state budget, which included one-time allocations of $1 million each to the Arizona Commission on the Arts and Arizona State Parks.
