Weekend Freeway Travel Advisory (May 3-6): SR 143 closed near Sky Harbor Airport

Several freeway-improvement projects in the Phoenix area will require closures this weekend (May 3-5), according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and consider alternate routes while the following freeway closures are in place this weekend:

• State Route 143 (Hohokam Expressway) closed in both directions between Interstate 10 and University Drive near Sky Harbor Airport from 11 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday (May 6) for pipeline work. Northbound 48th Street closed at Broadway Road. DETOUR: Sky Harbor traffic can use I-10 to Buckeye Road to access airport’s west entrance. Alternate north-south routes include 40th and 52nd streets.

• Southbound State Route 51 (Piestewa Freeway) closed between Greenway and Cactus roads from 11 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday (May 4) for installation of ramp meter equipment. DETOUR: Drivers can use Bell, Greenway, or Thunderbird roads to 32nd or 40th streets southbound to Cactus Road to access southbound SR 51.

• Southbound State Route 51 on-ramps at Greenway and Thunderbird roads closed from 11 p.m. Friday to noon Sunday (May 5) for installation of ramp meter equipment. DETOUR: Drivers can use Greenway or Thunderbird roads to 32nd or 40th streets southbound to Cactus Road to access southbound SR 51.

• Northbound Interstate 17 closed at Peoria Avenue from 9 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday (May 4) for installation of ramp meter equipment. DETOUR: Drivers can exit and re-enter I-17 using the off- and on-ramps at Peoria Avenue.

• Northbound Interstate 17 closed at Bell Road from 11 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday (May 5) for installation of ramp meter equipment. DETOUR: Drivers can exit and re-enter I-17 using the off- and on-ramps at Bell Road.
