City of Phoenix residents will see no water or sewer rate increases for the second year in a row in 2014.

The average single-family residential water bill will remain $37.75 per month and the average single-family residential sewer bill will remain at $20.71 per month. Both rates are low compared to national averages according to City of Phoenix staff, and lower than several other Valley cities. If homeowners use the same amount of water in 2014, their bill should not change.

“As the cost of living continues to rise, Phoenix is keeping the one bill we all have to pay as low as possible,” said Councilwoman Thelda Williams, chairwoman of the City Council Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee in a statement. “I commend our Water Services Department for taking such good care of our city’s most vital resource.”

City staff have said the lack of an increase is due to numerous efficiency efforts. The Mayor and City Council commissioned a Water Services Efficiency study in 2011 and out of more than 100 recommendations that came from that study, 97 percent have been implemented.

“Our Water Services Department employees have done a remarkable job managing our water and sewer systems,” said Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton in a statement. “Taxpayers throughout the city benefit from the department’s efficiency and skill.”

The city has planned $710 million in water capitol projects over the next five years and $473 million in wastewater capitol projects over the next five years. Sixty-one percent of the water and wastewater fund budget goes to capitol projects. The majority of that money will be used to maintain the system and infrastructure already in place.

The proposal was considered by the Phoenix City Council Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee and approval unanimously on Dec. 10. The entire presentation can be viewed online at phoenix.gov.
