An Ahwatukee Foothills resident was killed in a crash on Interstate 10 Tuesday night after his SUV hit the back of a truck abandoned in the middle of the interstate, Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) officials said.

Close to midnight on Nov. 13 Jae Chul Myung, 51, of Irvine, Calif., and Kyu B. Chae, 49, of Cypress, Calif., were driving a Chevrolet box truck on I-10, close to the State Route 143 interchange, when they got a flat tire, officials said. Instead of pulling over to the side of the road the two left the truck in traffic, said Bart Graves of DPS.

David Charles Wolf, 46, of Ahwatukee was driving his Chevrolet SUV and likely did not see the stopped truck, officials said. His SUV hit the back of the truck and spun around before coming to a rest in the HOV lane. Wolf was pronounced dead at the scene, Graves said.

Myung and Chae were not inside the box truck when it was hit. It was unknown if they would face charges for abandoning the truck in traffic. The collision is still under investigation. DPS has referred to the County Attorney’s Office to decide if criminal prosecution should go forward, Graves said. The two occupants of the box truck are not being held, but Graves said authorities are staying in contact with them.
