Sen. John McComish got a close look at a public charter school this weekend.

He visited Ambassador Academy in Ahwatukee Foothills on Saturday and spoke with school officials and teachers regarding the current state of education and funding in Arizona.

"The legislature is looking at all the options," he said.

In the presence of looming budget cuts, Ambassador Academy received a boost in a $5,000 donation from Vision Community Management which dropped off boxes of paper, food and other supplies on Saturday. The organization that manages local home owner associations "adopted" the school and will deliver more goods to the school in the coming months.

"There are a lot of charter schools running out of money," Vision Community Manager Jen Amundson said. "We knew what they needed and we wanted to help out."

Ambassador Academy, 3820 E. Ray Road, focuses on leadership and academic excellence, principal Dr. Iris Reyes said. The school, which opened its current location in August, has 46 students and is accepting kindergarten through fifth grade for the 2011-12 school year. It will be hosting an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. To find out more, visit www.AmbassadorAcademy.us or call (480) 961-2214.
