The Kyrene School District may consider getting an appraisal on the parcel of land near Club West before sending out a Request for Proposals to sell it.
The governing board discussed options during a study session meeting on Tuesday, April 23. It’s unclear at this point if the district will need to bring in additional funding by selling the land or not.
Selling the Club West parcel of land, nearly 11 acres located at 13th Avenue and Chandler Boulevard, is listed as one of the district’s budget balancing strategies but it’s unclear if it’s a creative strategy the district will need to move forward with.
The governing board cannot make decisions during a study session but there was conversation about getting an appraisal on the land before sending out an RFP to sell it. Board members expressed a desire to be informed of the worth of the land before making a decision as to sell it or keep it for now. So far the district has received some offers for the land but the offers were unsolicited.
The land was originally purchased by the district as a possible site for a school. Instead, Kyrene del Milenio was built in 2000.
In the past the governing board considered leasing the property, possibly to a company to build apartments on the land, but staff at the city of Phoenix have said getting the zoning for that type of density is unlikely in that area. Now the board must decide to sell the land or keep ownership and wait for the best option.
The district is considering several options to balance the budget. It’s unknown what options will be necessary until decisions at the state capitol regarding bonding are addressed.
