For the second year the Ahwatukee Foothills community is being encouraged to shop local for a day on Saturday, Aug. 17.

The Cash Mob, as the Ahwatukee Foothills Chamber of Commerce has dubbed it, is different from a Small Business Saturday. Residents are encouraged to shop anywhere within the Ahwatukee Foothills Village since many businesses are run by Ahwatukee residents and the taxes from each sale directly benefit the local community.

The chamber hopes people will use the event as an excuse to try a new business or to simply patronize one they already love.

“Last year we got a response from the community thanking us for reminding them about our local businesses and who the owners of these businesses are,” said Anne Gill, chamber president and CEO. “They’re our neighbors and they’re active in our community. The second response we got was from businesses, whether they were members of the chamber or not, thanking us for reminding the community about the local businesses and focusing on the effort to shop local first.”

Because the event is being sponsored by the chamber, many chamber members are hosting specials this Saturday to encourage shoppers to come through their doors. All those deals can be found at ahwatukeechamber.com.

Businesses in Arizona usually slow down in the summer while many residents are away enjoying cooler weather. Now that schools are back in session, Ahwatukee businesses are ready to get back to business themselves. The Cash Mob is an effort to get people out of the house and supporting their local economy.

“It’s just our effort to keep reminding people how important it is not only for businesses, but for the community as a whole,” Gill said. “It’s important to shop local first and support our local businesses and our local economy. the dollars spent locally go back into our economy in a greater way than those that aren’t spent here.”
