The Phoenix Fire Department is giving the community a chance to get to know local firefighters by hosting an open house at four fire stations this Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon, including Ahwatukee Foothills Fire Station No. 43, 4110 E. Chandler Blvd.

May 19-25 is National Emergency Medical Services Week. The purpose of the week is to bring together local communities and medical personnel to honor the dedication of first responders who provide pre-hospital lifesaving care.

Saturday’s event will allow the community to get to know the first responders closest to them. Emergency medical calls make up 87 percent of the calls to the Phoenix Fire Department, a department spokesperson said.

In 2012, firefighters responded to 149,441 emergency medical calls.

Other stations across Phoenix that will be open to the public on May 18 are No. 12, 3217 E. Glenrosa Ave., No. 50, 20225 N. 35th Ave., and No. 54, 9820 W. Campbell Ave.
