Desert Vista and three Kyrene schools were locked down Tuesday morning after police called the schools regarding two suspicious men, one thought to posess a gun, that were near the campus.

Desert Vista was locked down from 9:15 to 9:30 a.m. and Kyrene de la Estrella Elementary, Kyrene de los Lagos Elementary and Akimel A-al Middle School were locked down from 9:20 to 9:50 a.m.

Tempe Union High School District spokesperson Linda Littell said Phoenix police called them as a "precautionary measure" because the men were close to campus. She said they were apprehended shortly afterward.

The Kyrene schools went into a modified lockdown, meaning they could move within the buildings they were already in, but the doors leading to the outside were locked.

Police also visited Desert Vista on Monday afternoon when a security guard found a "suspicious-looking" container that was unattended on campus. Littell said police were called and they X-rayed the container, which turned out to be a student's science project.

"It was in a jar and the student was apparently trying to make a battery," Littell said. "There was no threat."
