Drivers who normally use State Route 143 (Hohokam Expressway) to access Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport or for travel between McDowell Road and Interstate 10 are urged to use alternate routes this weekend. Staggered closures are scheduled this weekend as crews prepare to open two new ramps linking SR 143 with Sky Harbor Boulevard. The new ramps are scheduled to open Monday (March 5) to improve connections on the airport’s east side. The Arizona Department of Transportation recommends drivers allow extra travel time and consider alternate routes while the following restrictions are in place:

Southbound State Route 143 (Hohokam Expressway) closed from McDowell Road to University Drive from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday (March 5) for restriping and sign installation. Westbound Sky Harbor Boulevard also closed between Loop 202 (Red Mt. Freeway) and 44th Street. Westbound I-10 ramp to northbound SR 143 closed. Note: Northbound SR 143 ramp to westbound Sky Harbor Boulevard will close at 9 p.m. Friday and remain closed for reconstruction through June 2012. DETOUR: Access Sky Harbor Airport via University Drive and 44th Street or use west entrance near I-10 and 24th Street.

Northbound State Route 143 closed between Sky Harbor Boulevard and Washington Street from 9 p.m. Friday to 9 p.m. Saturday (March 3); then eastbound Sky Harbor Boulevard closed between 44th Street and SR 143 from 9 p.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday (March 5) for restriping and sign installation. DETOUR: Access airport via University Drive and 44th Street or use west entrance near I-10 and 24th Street.

I-10 narrowed to one lane in both directions between Riggs Road and Wild Horse Pass Boulevard in Chandler area from 10 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday (March 5) for pavement repair. All ramps at westbound I-10 and Queen Creek Road closed. DETOUR: Use eastbound I-10 from Wild Horse Pass Boulevard to access Queen Creek Road. Note: Additional work scheduled Monday through Thursday nights in this area next week.

Southbound Interstate 17 (Black Canyon Highway) narrowed to two lanes between Camelback and Thomas roads from 9 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday (March 5) for pavement repair. DETOUR: Merge carefully and obey posted speed limits in this active work zone.

Superstition Springs Boulevard at US 60 (Superstition Freeway) narrowed to one lane in each direction from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday (March 5) for repaving. Westbound US 60 on-ramp and eastbound off-ramp closed. DETOUR: Use on- and off-ramps at Power Road.
