Keller Williams Realty is organizing a comprehensive food drive to help feed some Kyrene families struggling financially.

In the inaugural event last year, employees of the Keller Williams-Sonoran Living office in Ahwatukee Foothills set a goal of collecting 100 boxes worth of food. They ended up taking in more than 175 boxes, which was then donated to the Kyrene Family Resource Center.

Each box contained a variety of goods, including pasta, cereal and canned meat and vegetables that could feed a family for a week. The collection took place over several weeks last year at various locations. Collection for this year's event culminates on May 12, when places like Bashas', Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA and CVS will be accepting donations throughout the morning.

When the collection is complete, the staff of Keller Williams will assemble bags for the resource center to pick up that day.

"It's a great community event because a lot of local businesses are stepping up and getting involved," said Mimi Cox, a real estate agent for Keller Williams. "Bashas' has been absolutely wonderful because last year they stepped up and donated 100 bags for us to hold the goods."

The Kyrene School District identified more than 400 homeless families living within the district this school year. They offer a variety of services for these families but the resource center is where clothing, food, toiletries and more can be found.

"It's been changing significantly," Amanda Hamm, prevention manager at Kyrene, said of the number of homeless families in Kyrene. "There has been a huge increase... We have families of four who are living in a guest room ... it's incredibly stressful for them."

Anyone can drop donations off at the Keller Williams-Sonoran Living office, 4621 E. Chandler Blvd. On May 12, donations will be accepted at Bashas', 4855 E. Warner Road; CVS, 4430 E. Ray Road; Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA, 1030 E. Liberty Lane; and the Mendoza Team-Keller Williams office, 3840 E. Ray Road.
