A security guard for Desert Vista High School was found dead on the school’s track just before 5 a.m. on Wednesday morning.

Phoenix police say it appears that Pat Quinn, who was in his 50s, died of a heart attack. He was known to run often on the school track.

Phoenix Police Officer James Holmes said they do not plan to investigate the death further.

“Patrick J. (Pat) Quinn was employed as a security guard with the district from 2002-2004, and then again from 2006 until present,” said Linda Littell, director of communications for Tempe Union High School District.

“He was a dedicated and well-respected employee and our heart goes out to the family, some of whom are also employees of the district.”

Crisis counselors were available for staff and students at the school on Wednesday and some seniors honored Quinn by wearing gold ribbons during commencement Thursday night.

Rachel Proudfoot, former DV girls basketball coach, who stepped down this week to tend to her ailing godmother in Virginia, said Quinn was a huge part of the Desert Vista community.

““Our students, every department and every building was devastated,”” she said. ““I asked all my classes (on Wednesday) to raise their hands if he ever made you smile on a day you didn’'t want to be here, and every one of them raised their hand.

“The guy was amazing. Every time I pulled into the parking lot he took his hands and made a heart,” Proudfoot continued. “What a way to start your day, and now that he hasn’'t been here to do that it has been so hard.””

A “Celebration of Life” will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 3 at the Grace Inn in Ahwatukee Foothills, 10831 S. 51st St., to honor Quinn.

Those who would like to do something for the family are encouraged to make a donation to one or both of the charities Quinn loved, the ASPCA or the United Phoenix Firefighters Emerald Society.
