Authorities say an Ahwatukee teacher is accused of having sex with a teenage girl who was one of his students at Horizon Community Learning Center in Ahwatukee.
Phoenix police spokesman James Holmes said on Sunday, police were called to investigate allegations of multiple sex acts between David DePuydt, 27, and a minor.
Authorities said during their investigation, they learned DePuydt, a teacher at Horizon Community Learning Center (HCLC), has been in a relationship with a 15-year-old student for approximately seven months.
The victim was interviewed and disclosed the acts to detectives, Holmes said.
Depuydt was later booked into jail on six counts of sexual conduct with a minor.
Holmes said the investigation is ongoing at this time.
Betsy Fera, executive director of Horizon Community Learning Center, released a statement on the charter school’s website Monday.
“At Horizon Community Learning Center, we know the value of sharing important news with our community,” the statement said. “We believe that one of the reasons our school continues to excel is because we are always honest and forthright with information we are allowed to share.”
Fera confirmed that the victim is an HCLC high school student and said that DePuydt is suspended without pay during the investigation. HCLC is cooperating with Phoenix police to help in the investigation.
