Firefighters were dispatched to an apartment complex in Ahwatukee Foothills at 2:45 p.m. on Sunday after a fire broke out in a third-story apartment.
Flames and smoke could be seen coming out of the roof of the top-floor apartment at Presidio at South Mountain Apartments, 13229 S. 48th Street.
Phoenix Fire Department captain Jorge Enriquez said there was damage to four units in total, including the one where the fire initially started.
“We are guessing that it started in the bathroom – a fan in the bathroom...(it was) electrical, maybe,” he said. “There's a lot of damage to the main apartment...the damage to the others is a little bit of smoke and water damage.”
Firefighters used axes and a chainsaw to cut away shingling on the roof in order to spray down inside the top two apartments.
"It's just a lot of work," Enriquez said of fighting a third-story fire. "That's why they practice, so it can be done quickly."
By 3:05 p.m. the fire was contained, he said. Four families will be displaced.
