Halloween, which typically attracts a large number of people to city streets, can present a number of hazards to revelers, but there are several measures one can take to stay safe this Sunday, Oct. 31, according to the Phoenix Police Department.
Trick-or-treaters
For those making the rounds collecting candy, police recommend approaching only houses that are lit, staying away from any pets you don't know, and stay in well-lighted, familiar neighborhoods. Younger children should trick-or-treat with an adult, while it's recommended that older children go in groups and make sure an adult knows their route and the time they'll be back.
Trick-or-treaters also should carry a flashlight, stay on sidewalks and take care in crossing streets.
Parents
Parents should make sure that costumes do not drag on the ground and that children can see clearly out of masks, according to police. One suggestion is to use makeup on the face instead of a mask.
Children are advised to carry glow sticks or wear clothing with reflective markings.
Police also recommend that parents throw out all unwrapped treats or anything that looks suspicious. Parents should inspect candy for signs of tampering before it is eaten.
Homeowners
Residents who anticipate visits by trick-or-treaters should secure any pets and clear the yard of ladders, hoses or anything that can trip revelers. Police recommend using a battery-powered Jack-o-lantern instead of one with candles, but if candles are used, the pumpkin should be places away from where trick-or-treaters will be walking.
Drivers
Those out driving on Halloween are asked to drive slowly and watch out for trick-or-treaters who might be having a good time and not looking for cars.
