During the first century of statehood, five Cs — the cattle, citrus, climate, copper and cotton depicted on the state seal — have made Arizona shine. This Cronkite News special report examines the status of these Cs, elements that helped chart Arizona’s transition from the Wild West to a cosmopolitan Western state.

Many copper mines that once dominated towns are closed. Vast expanses of citrus groves have been replaced by multiple housing subdivisions. The favorable climate that has driven population growth for decades is now imperiled by that growth. Cattle ranchers continue their traditions against a backdrop of environmental regulations and economic pressures. Cotton production, which has risen and fallen, has seen a resurgence of late due to global demand. Explore the past, present and future of the Five Cs.
