Lasers are often used in medical practices and engineering, but a new company in Tempe is making lasers available for all people to create any number of unique gift ideas or personalized home products.

The company is a “retail-tainment concept” where customers can come in, select a product to customize, and then use a laser to put their own unique design on the product.

“It’s a lot like an As You Wish with lasers,” co-owner Jennifer Phipps said.

Phipps said her husband, Dave, has been using lasers for different projects for years. Over time the couple realized all the different things that could be done easily with lasers, but the cost for an average person to own a laser machine isn’t reasonable. They decided to come up with a creative way to share their knowledge and love with the general public.

“We fell in love with what the lasers could do,” Phipps said. “It’s one little box and it can create so much. It’s as simple as writing on a coffee cup and as complex as creating 3-D designs. It’s so simple, but not available to the public. Most people don’t even know about this technology and what it can do. We thought, ‘Can we figure out a way to bring this to the public and simplify it down enough that people won’t feel overwhelmed and can have a good time and make it an experience?’”

At Let’s Laser customers pay a fee to use the laser and are handed a computer. They choose their product from one of around 100 products off the shelf and find the template on the computer. They fill in the template, put their item into the laser machine and hit “print” to put images on a candle or a wine glass or into a piece of wood. The lasers can also be used to cut through wood or other materials to create sturdy puzzles or 3-D models.

The couple also decided to create a “member room” at Let’s Laser for customers who want to personalize or create items that aren’t on their shelves. A monthly membership fee allows individuals or businesses to come in and use the lasers to brand or create their own products.

“We just thought it would be something fun and different to do with a family member or friend and make it fun and then they also walk away with something they might use or give and feel proud about,” Phipps said. “I think that’s why ‘retail-tainment’ is becoming so big. People are so limited in time and money, but this is fun because you’re making the gift and having fun and it’s the same dollars they would have spent to walk into a store and pick it off a shelf.”

Let’s Laser, 8058 S. Priest Drive in Tempe, is open Tuesday through Sunday with day and evening hours. The studio will also have occasional classes to teach how to do specific projects.

The studio will be having a grand opening on Tuesday, Nov. 5 with a ribbon cutting at 3 p.m. and a party from 4 to 8 p.m. There will be music indoors and out, catering and raffles and giveaways.
