Through Dec. 29 soft toys purchased at Ikea will help provide quality education to children in developing countries.
The Soft Toys for Education campaign has been a tradition at Ikea since 2003. One euro, or $1.30, from each toy purchased will be donated to education programs supported by UNICEF and Save the Children.
“The funds from the soft toy campaign support these children with school books, writing materials, as well as teacher training, and classrooms,” said Mona Liss, corporate public relations director for Ikea. “In some situations it goes beyond this to support the community in understanding how important education is for their children and making sure they are not staying at home or working as child laborers.”
Ikea raised $16.2 million last year and has raised over $61 million since the program began. Those funds have helped 8 million children in more than 40 countries.
“Funds donated to Save the Children will support projects to educate the most marginalised children, including ethnic minorities and those with disabilities and special needs in Cambodia, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Lithuania and Romania,” Liss said in an official statement. “Funds donated to UNICEF will support UNICEF’s Schools for Africa initiative to provide a quality education to children in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, South Africa and Malawi.”
The toys range in cost from 49 cents to $19.99, and can be purchased from Ikea in Tempe, 2110 W. Ikea Way.
The local Tempe Ikea partners with TCAA (Tempe Community Action Agency) to host its Toy Shoppe for clients. Part of Ikea’s restaurant will be transformed Dec. 18-20 into a toy shop where TCAA clients can come and pick out toys for their kids.
New donated toys purchased from Ikea or other retailers can be donated anytime at the drop-off point near the cash registers from Thanksgiving until Dec. 20.
“Customers are able to ‘double’ their donation by purchasing soft toys at Ikea (and $1 for each soft toy is donated to UNICEF) and also donate the soft toy to TCAA for the Toy Shoppe,” said Alison Kim of Ikea Tempe.
