Even though she has worked in the community for years, Patricia Stamper admits opening up her own practice can be a little nerve-wracking.

The Ahwatukee Foothills resident opened the doors to Vision Edge Eye Center, 7130 W. Chandler Blvd. in Chandler, less than two weeks ago after having worked at different optometric practices around the Valley for the past eight years.

“The most difficult thing is letting people know that you are here and you are open,” she said.

Before coming to Ahwatukee Foothills eight years ago, Stamper spent two years living and working with underserved people in Honduras. She had been volunteering there once a year leading up to the move, when she decided to commit herself to the cause fully.

“The people we worked with couldn’t afford the services so the group I went with brought down surgeons for kids who needed things like eye muscle surgery,” Stamper said. “It’s a very different environment.”

Before moving to Honduras, Stamper started her career as chief of optometry at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho.

She still plans on making a trip to Honduras once per year, but right now her focus is on building up her new practice.

“The economy was getting better so I thought now was the right time,” Stamper said. “The location was important for me and this one is great because it’s close and it’s a good area.”
