Eight years ago, Ahwatukee resident Eleanor Marsh decided to leave the corporate world. On the anniversary of her mother’s death, April 8, she decided to do something she was passionate about — taking care of animals.

“I decided to take something horrible and turn it into a positive,” she said. “Now, I feel blessed. I love getting up every day and going to work.”

While You’r Away Services takes care of pets, homes, mail, and more. Marsh has won several “Best Of Ahwatukee” awards for Best Pet Services.

Marsh starts each client off with a free meet and greet to get to know the pet and see what the owner expects. She customizes each visit to the owner and tries to follow their normal schedule closely.

“It’s like grandma is there instead of mom and dad,” Marsh said. “If they want me there at four in the morning, I’m there at 4 a.m. I do overnights, long walks, day visits, medication, taking them to the vet. I do anything the client would like me to do for them.

I work 24-7, but it’s not work. I love what I do. It’s my passion.”

While cats and dogs are usual customers, or “babies” as Marsh calls them, Marsh said she’s also taken care of lizards, birds, tortoises and many other animals. The only animal she doesn’t care for is snakes.

Marsh doesn’t only take care of pets, she’ll watch over the house and bring in newspapers or check the mail. She’ll also stick around if a homeowner is expecting a technician to come at an odd time.

Her only goal for the future is to do exactly what she does — but a little bit better.

“I’m very picky with my company,” Marsh said. “My goal is to give the clients exactly what they need. The pets are like my grandchildren. I always give 100 percent.”
