Self confidence and financial confidence can go hand-in-hand, according to Cynthia Fick of Financial Life Planners in Ahwatukee. That’s why Financial Life Planners decided to become the corporate sponsor for the Girls Rule Foundation.

“We decided to sponsor Girls Rule because its purpose is in complete alignment with our goal of empowering women to gain self esteem and self confidence in their lives in general and how it affects them and money,” Fick said.

She noted a lot of times you can be your own worst enemy when it comes to your finances. It’s often the same with young girls, which is what Girls Rule tries to tackle.

The Girls Rule Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that hosts workshops and programs for girls ages 12 to 18 meant to empower them. They strive to teach girls that they are brilliant, beautiful and bold.

“I think a lot of girls on some level don’t feel good about themselves,” Fick said. “There’s so much pressure from outside sources. You’ve got to be skinny, beautiful and famous and they look at themselves and think ‘That’s not me.’ Even though I think today there are more girls feeling empowered to go to any college they want and jump into any career field, I think sometimes still deep inside they don’t feel good about themselves. When you come from that place it can just make you feel unhappy in your life and frustrated.”

Fick said what she sees a lot of in her career are women who have been raised to believe they don’t need to worry about money or that they will never have the funds they need to accomplish their dreams. Her goal is to empower those women and through Girls Rule, she hopes to keep these young girls from having those thoughts.

Girls Rule is accepting nominations for the Brilliant, Beautiful and Bold Role Model Award, which is given to four Arizona teen girls who make a difference in their community, family or school. Nominators are asked to write 500 words or less on how their nominee is a role model and makes a difference, and submit that to Girls Rule by Sept. 7.

The winners will be announced during the Girls Rule! Shine Brightly Teens and Women Summit from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 21 at the US Airways Arena, 201 E. Jefferson St. in downtown Phoenix.
